CATUR MAKSWIP 2013:  ALL ARE AIMIING FOR THE BEST FIGHTING CHESS Despite a small controversy prior to the kick off of the tournaments, it had been decided that, the MAKSWIP Chess 2013 shall be competed after all on this coming 21st and 22nd of September 2013. The Venue was set in the meeting to be held at RISDA Building Ampang, but the JPA is trying their best to offer a more condusive spot as a venue for this prestigous tournament. Among the confirmed teams are: DBKL, CIDB(2 teams), JPA (2 teams), LHDN, KWSP, KESAN, HRC, JKDM (Customs)(2 teams), MyIPO. The arbiter IA Abdul LAtif Mohamad still expecting more teams to turn up as participants as the date had been resheduled to 21st and 22nd September instead of the orginal schedule 17,18,19 September (4.00pm-12.00 midnight). More participation is anticipated from Bank Negara, Kem. Kerja Raya, BSN, Securities Commisioner, Jabatan Pendidikan Wilayah and Ministry of Finance. Some other rare teams which had occured in the history of MAKSWIP are Jabatan Pendaftaran Negara, MESCA, PERKESO, FRIM, LEMBAGA GETAH, MALAYSIAN TIMBER (MTIB). Last year's top 3 spots were the defending champion for the 11 consercutive years aincw 2002. LHDN led by 2 ex national players Mohd Saprin and Subramaniam emerged as the MAKSWIP champion in 2001. Unfortunately, all the last year's scoresheets were missing. Nobody knows who took all the scoresheets. Therefore I personally could not commemorate all the games into a chess buletin, a thing (or rather a profession) which I normally do. It is all for preserving the records and as an innitiative to upgrade all MAKSWIP chess players skill  and level of play. The previous recorded game compiled into a chess buletin can be a very useful tool as a chess database which is a source for the chess training and preparation for the next series of MAKSWIP chess. Hopefully, this years' games records could be commerorated into a chess buletin. The ultimate objective of this tournamanet is to select 6 best players from any teams participated to represent MASKWIP in the next MAKSAK 2013 which shall be held at Johore Baharu from 3rd to 6th October 2013.

CATUR MAKSWIP 2011 - DBKL RETAINS THEIR CHAMPION STATUS QUO

Yesterday 15 teams from numerous government agencies had taken part in the Catur MAKSWIP 2011 which ended with the defending champion DBKL since 2000, retained their champion status quo. They easily trashed their opponent team KSN 4-0 in the 1st round, winning with a very narrow margin 2.5-1.5 on KASTAM A in the second round. Then they began to show their true colour by trashing BSN A 4-0 in the 3rd round and JPA A 3-1 in the 4th round. In the 5th and final round, they wrapping up their campaign by defeating a new comer FRIM A 3-1.

With this result, they again emerged as the champion for the catur MAKSWIP. DBKL was represented by NM Kamalarifin Wahiduddin, Mohd Zambri Mohd Shariff, Muhd Akmal Sealine, Azman Yahya and Bahtiar Saedon. This means the KASTAM (my Department) players have to wait for another year to try to wrest the champion title from the reigning champion. KASTAM had been the runner up since 2006 consercutively up to this year 2011.

As the event had finished a bit late last night (at about 11.00 pm) I had been not able to key in the games yet. However, I presented here, one of the most bitter fought game of mind against the board one player of FRIM A.

After my opponent's last move 33...Qe7, I sensed that the potential discovered attack on black's Queen should gives white the decisive knock out punch. Since white is already 2 pawns up (during the game I only thought white is only a pawn up, I displayed the winning combination which ended up with white winning another pawn and in the process exchanging all the heavy pieces leaving the white knight versus the black Bishop.

34. Rxg6! Rxc5 (black had been relying on this, but this falls short to...) 35.Rxg7+! (35.Qxg7+! is also possible) 35...Qxg7 36.Qxg7 Kxg7 37.Nxc5 and the game played on a couple of moves before until Black lost his Bishop by 2 forks combination.

The 3rd place were wrested by the JPA A who had just got their new star, the ever popular blogger and my friend in chess Hairulov.



And the new comer, AG (Accountant General managed to wrest the 4th placing). All the selected players for MAKSWIP (MAKSAK KL) shall start their training session beginning this Wednesday. The MAKSWIP (MAKSAK KL) is the defending champion of the Catur MAKSAK 2010.

CATUR MAKSWIP 2011 It is confirmed that the actual date for the MAKSWIP Chess Tournamanet shall be on the 9th and 10th of July 2011. Again and again and again, I shall lead the Jabatan Kastam Diraja Malaysia (JKDM) team to give our best shot to wrest the gold medal from the reigning champion since 2000 DBKL. JDKM had been always becoming the runner up (except in 2005- 3rd place lost half point to Kementerian Kerja Raya) since 2003 until last year. CATUR MAKSAK 2011 This means the most awaited event for the government chess players, shall be about 2 weeks, that is from 22nd to 24th of July in Perak. SUKAN KEWANGAN 2010

After a mediocre result from the 3rd DATCC League and disastrous 4/9 score from the recent National Closed, I see my FIDE rating had dropped 5 points to below 2000. It seemed that, I should stop playing chess after all. However, being a customs officer, I had no excuse from taking the responsibility to play on board no.1 for my department (Jabatan Kastam) in the recent Sukan Kewangan which were held at DATCC from 14 to 16th July 2010. The most bitter rivals on board one were among others, the experienced Goh Teck Koon (KWSP) and Abang Mohd Reduan (BSN - also MAKSAK Sarawak board no.1 player). Fortunately I did not have to add another headache facing the father of the 2 siblings WCM and WFM, Azman Hisham Che Doi of Securities Commisioners due to his busy of managing his daughters who are playing abroad for the country.

Sincerely speaking, I was happy to make a draw against them and would be trying to beat the other who are not as strong as the mentioned rivals. Incidentally, I only managed to draw against NM Kamalarifin Wahiduddin (DBKL) and Mohd Fahmi (LHDN) in the MAKSWIP Chess Tournament 2010, that was a few days before the SUKAN KEWANGAN.

It turned up unexpectedly pleasant achievement. I scored the full 7 points including victories against Goh Teck Koon and Abang Mohd Reduan.

CATUR MAKSWIP 2010

I received the sms from Mr Zul of RTM , "Catur MAKSWIP 10-11.7". Looks like I am going to play 2 tournaments in a row (after that Catur Sukan Kewangan 14-16 July) with my fellows from JKDM (Customs Department). Well, actually 3 in a row because Catur MAKSAK must be very nearby.

One of the approaches in building an opening repertoire is to have a specific setup which is playable against various (if not all) defence systems. I could not help myself from thinking about Julian Hodgson who employs 1.d4 2.Bg5 exclusively against anyone to the extend that the late Edouard Gufeld regarded the system as Hodgson's nuclear weapon in one of CHESS Pergamon.

IM Gary Lane had produced this book which is very ideal for those who are one of the following categories:-
1. One who wish to have a formidable system but too lazy to study opening theories.
2. One who is too busy to have ample time to study opening theories.
3. One who only prefers other to enter his scope of opening repertoire and do not wish to see any "other things" in the openings.

Here Gary Lane recommended the London system. Indeed, London system can be used agaisnt almost anything such as King Indian, Gruenfeld, Nimzo / Queen Indian, Queen Gambit or Slav etc. One of notable local chess players, NM Kamal Ariffin Wahiduddin had used this book to its maximum and had notched many important points adopting this approach. Other players who is adopting the London as part of their systems are Fairin Zakaria, Hairul Hamid (http://hairulovchessmaniacs.blogspot.com/).
