TRAINING FOR THE VISUAL IMPAIRED KL TEAM
I was being contacted by the Melaka Paralimpic squad a few months ago, requesting me to fulfil the task as the coach of the Malacca's paralimpic squad. However, since then, no news had been heard. No contact, no sms and no letter. In fact, it was me who tried to make some calls and sent some sms but to this point, I had received no reply.
Meanwhile, the KL team had been contacting me very recently. At first, I asked the KL manager, Rosham to liase with the Malacca's team first as regards to my position. After 2 weeks, where there is no progress and as time is already crucial (the Malaysian paralimpic games shall start on the 21st of November), I had agreed to coach the KL players. To my surprise, most of the KL palyers (the visual impaired) are already known to me, Mat Idris, Ramalik, Mahadzir, Mah Hassan, Amir and Sariah are among the players in the squad.
I had the feeling that, KL may have very good chances to clinch many gold medals, as long as somebody must stop Nur Feiqha at the board. Naaturally, I would have to make some special antidote for the female KL team to face her.
The training session is conducted at the cafeteria of the Malaysian Association for the Blind at Brickfield. The training sessions is scheduled on every Saturday 2.00pm - 5.30 pm and Sunday 9.00 am - 12.30pm

THE SIDELINE STORY
My writing today may be a little bit deviation from 'chess line'.

THE END OF THE CHESS OLYMPIAD 2010
I had not been writing at my blog for about 1 month, simply not because I was too lazy to write, instead I was too busy with my normal life (non-chess matters: working, fasting of Syawal, visiting my relatives and my wife relatives in conjunction with the Syawal Eid Fitri) Syawal is approaching to its end, and so was the Chess Olympiad which had closed its curtain recently. I enjoyed my bloggers colleagues' chess covevarage, all sorts of news and Mas' Nokia Gambit incident.
Meanwhile, I had almost finished the recent SUKAN KEWANGAN 2010 buletin, (with only a few games to be keyed in) and I expect it to be ready in the market in about 2 weeks time. As regards to the MAKSAK, due to my extreme time constrain, I had just finished up to round 3 (There are 8 more rounds to go).
For chess enthusiasts especially from the government sectors which involved in chess (MAKSAK and SUKAN KEWANGAN) may call / sms to me for further information.

THE MAKSAK CHESS PAST CHAMPIONS AND HOST
I had been playing for KUALA LUMPUR in MAKSAK Chess Tournament since 1999 a year after being employed by the Customs Department. For the history purpose, here I present the table featuring all the hosts and the psst champions and vice champions. If anybody finds any fault about the fact above, please email to me for correction. As far as I concerned this is the best that I could recall.

MAKSAK 2010
Alhamdulillah!
That's the best description for KL team, comprises of myself as the captain, NM Kamalarifin Wahiduddin, Mohd Zambri Mohd Shariff, Azman Hisham Che Doi (The father of the prominent siblings WCM and WFM Nur Najiha and Nur Nabila, not to forget Mohd Nabil) and 2 new and formidable face, Shamsudin Mat Isa and Muhammad Rizal Jusah, not to forget, our provocative manager, Hassan, and all the MAKSWIP managment, including Abang Zul (Zulkifly Md Din) and Mr Zaini.
Also, thank you for the smooth conduct of the progress of the tournament by the IA Ibrahim Yaacob and his son, son in law and daughter. (Despite some critics and complaint made openly, I think it is not a major flaw)
My conclusion is, we won the MAKSAK Chess Championship in KL (The last time we won was in MAKSAK 2006 at KL) due to a few factors:-
1. We field 2 Rizals in our team (Well this is only symbolic)
2. I suppose we have the better preparation. This year, we even had set the line up before hand and even set who will play who (using the prediction bases on the previous database).
3. We even tried to analyse and discuss deeply, besides our favourite openings, the variation which may surface when meeting particular players.
4. We also played a few blitz (but cannot be too much as blitz will usually spoils the game) to prepare for the time trouble circumstances, and the blitz games were limited to our openig preparation only.
5. A few of us also listen to the DVDs / videos presentation available from the net by the GMs.
6. We possess the best team spirit, and confidence.
Below is my last game from the tournament this year with my arch rival Md Anis Rahimi of Kelantan. As usual, I face an unpregnable fortress position which made me think a lot and in the end suffers an extreme time trouble. But during the blitz mode, the fortune (as before this) shines with me and won by a checkmate using a pawn

SUKAN KEWANGAN 2010
After a mediocre result from the 3rd DATCC League and disastrous 4/9 score from the recent National Closed, I see my FIDE rating had dropped 5 points to below 2000. It seemed that, I should stop playing chess after all. However, being a customs officer, I had no excuse from taking the responsibility to play on board no.1 for my department (Jabatan Kastam) in the recent Sukan Kewangan which were held at DATCC from 14 to 16th July 2010. The most bitter rivals on board one were among others, the experienced Goh Teck Koon (KWSP) and Abang Mohd Reduan (BSN - also MAKSAK Sarawak board no.1 player). Fortunately I did not have to add another headache facing the father of the 2 siblings WCM and WFM, Azman Hisham Che Doi of Securities Commisioners due to his busy of managing his daughters who are playing abroad for the country.
Sincerely speaking, I was happy to make a draw against them and would be trying to beat the other who are not as strong as the mentioned rivals. Incidentally, I only managed to draw against NM Kamalarifin Wahiduddin (DBKL) and Mohd Fahmi (LHDN) in the MAKSWIP Chess Tournament 2010, that was a few days before the SUKAN KEWANGAN.

NATIONAL BLIND 2010 RESULT
Last Saturday and Sunday, the Society Blind of Malaysia organised the National Blind Chess Championship 2010. I had been appointed as the arbiter of the tournament. The result are as follows:-
B1 Category (Total blind)
1. Mat Idris Saman - 3.5 pts out of 4 games (winning by 2-0 blitz 5 minutes play off)

CLOCK SIMUL AGAINST 30
Insya-Allah, I shall conduct 3 sessions of chess simuls (with 1 hour time control using the chess clock) against 10 for each session in Neo Manhattan Chess Center TTDI. In this case, all the 10 participants shall be required to record all the moves.
Right after the simul, I shall conduct an open topic (question and answer) for chess clinic, not confining to the game played in the simul. Anyway, the clinic shall be not more than 2 hours.

I was contacted by Rosham, the co-ordinator for this event to conduct this tournament as the arbiter. Well, the visual handicap people is no stranger to me as I had involved in coaching them since Manila 2005 Para Games, along with Mr Abdul Latif a.k.a Sifu.
Naturally, I asked, normally, Mr Abdul Latif will be the arbiter in charge. Rosham told me that, he (Latif) could not make it for some other reason. Eventually last night, Mr Latif rang me and explained that, he had, planned with his family to arrange the bethrothal ceremony of one of his daughters.
Therefore, all the visual handicaps, please make yourself available in this coming 5th and 6th of June 2010 at the Dewan Komanwel, MSN, Bukit Jalil. The event shall consist of 6 rounds starting at 8.00 am on the Saturday morning. They will be devided into B1 category, B2/B3 category and female category.

Do not underestimate the blind chess player. In Para games Manila 2005, I had the chance to play Eddy Suriyanto who at that time had just clinched his first gold medal. I just wanted to see, how strong was he. The battle turned up to be a victory for me but, of course this was only unofficial and I had the advantage of able to see. 3 years later he participated in the 1st KL Open, arriving late (missing 2 rounds) he managed to catch the 2nd place in the end beating all the normal players paired against him. In KL09 Para games, he also won a gold medal in one of the categories.

MEDIOCRE RESULT
Last night I continued my mediocre result in the 3rd DATCC campaign. So far I had played 5 times and lost 4 (including 1 by default) and managed only to win (after very hardworking) a single game. Fatigue, poor opening preparation, poor technique.. they are all major factor to this. May be it was my 'off' season, or may be I should take a long break from playing chess, but enjoying it in a different perspective, like keying in the games for the database (The GACC 2005 project; now, round 3 consist of 60 games to be keyed in is in progress), teaching kids or, my favourite one, selling chess books after telling some promotion stories about the book and chess.
The defeat against Yeoh Li Tian was not really a surprise. I had read and watched his excellent performance. All I wished was to give him the best challenge. Somehow, I did not manage to do so. He is really a matured chess player. There was no single mistake in his play against me last night.
READING FROM ILHAMUDIN"S CHESS ODYSSEY 2010
I somehow managed to catch a pair of eyes belonged to Nor Ilhamuddin Shaikh Ali during my encounter with Yeoh Li Tian last night. Just now, after reading his chess oddysey 2010 blog, a name suddenly strucks into my memory... Fahor Jahudi, a columnist that used to write in Utusan Malaysia a very long-long time ago. Like Ilhamudin, I also used to learn some chess techniques from his column.
By the way, my very first encounter in the Inter matrics UUM Sintok 1991 with Nor Ilhamudin, in the ending of Ruy Lopez exchange, I, with plenty of time, offered Nor Ilhamuddin a draw (which was accepted by him) in a drawish position,but with Ilham had less than 5 minutes. I felt that, it was not honoured to win him by default at that time.
like Ilham, I had also had an experienced with this man, Fahor Jahudi. I was only 18 during my 1st year Matriculation Center of International Islamic University. I was invited by the President of IIUM Chess Club, Bro. Arik Sanusi to "assist" the main campus players in their campaign in the Merdeka Chess Tournament. I still remember that, from 7 rounds, I got 5 points.
During my encounter with Fahor Jahudi, I managed to win some materials (I got a rook and a pawn for a Bishop) as early as move 14. Then the Queens were exchanged. I played rather quickly at that time, not because I was over confident, but during my young aged, I enjoyed playing chess quickly, without thinking too much about the intricacies of the position. After 33...Bc4 by my opponent, (at that time, I had a rook + 3 pawns for a Bishop) I somehow blundered by 34.b5 (which I actually did not realise at all that I had blundered) and my opponent took this opportunity to scold my verbally: "Haa! Inilah akibatnya over confident! Over confident la tu!". I was somehow shocked by this scold. However, Arik Sanusi who was playing beside me calmed me down by whispering "Rilek Zal,..rilek".
The game continued, and I had given him some material back (a rook + 3 pawns for a knight and a Bishop) At that time I even thought my Rook is better than a knight + Bishop. But after playing on, I blundered another pawn on move 44. However, I still remember Fischer's advice in his famous My 60 Memorable games, to exchange the pawns when material behind. Fahor Jahudi's problem was that, he has all weak pawns.
On move 46 I decided to kill of his knight and giving up my Rook. I considered that, this is the only way I could gobbled all the pawns and a lone;y Bishop cannot checkmate me. My judgment turned out to be a correct one. After 50.g4 hxg4 51.fxg4 I had 2 connected pass pawns. I was sure I would not lose and played on. After some maneuvers on move 64 I offered a draw seeing that, both could not progress. Again, my opponent scolded me:"kalau tadi saya nak draw. Sekarang saya taknak lah!". But suddenly after 65...Bh7?? I realised that my opponent had blundered. On move 76 it was my opponent who countered offer: "Nak draw?". I declined. After 73.Kc6 my opponent resign. Immediately another player of the IIUM whom we called his nick name as "Pocot' stated flatly " Tu laa.. tadi orang ajak draw taknak, kan dah kalah.."
Remembering this incident always made me smile. The names 'Pocot', Rahim, Arik Sanusi, Shamrazula who were the members of IIUM team might recall this incident, which I annotated it in my personal database.

like Ilham, I had also had an experienced with this man, Fahor Jahudi. I was only 18 during my 1st year Matriculation Center of International Islamic University. I was invited by the President of IIUM Chess Club, Bro. Arik Sanusi to "assist" the main campus players in their campaign in the Merdeka Chess Tournament. I still remember that, from 7 rounds, I got 5 points.
During my encounter with Fahor Jahudi, I managed to win some materials (I got a rook and a pawn for a Bishop) as early as move 14. Then the Queens were exchanged. I played rather quickly at that time, not because I was over confident, but during my young aged, I enjoyed playing chess quickly, without thinking too much about the intricacies of the position. After 33...Bc4 by my opponent, (at that time, I had a rook + 3 pawns for a Bishop) I somehow blundered by 34.b5 (which I actually did not realise at all that I had blundered) and my opponent took this opportunity to scold my verbally: "Haa! Inilah akibatnya over confident! Over confident la tu!". I was somehow shocked by this scold. However, Arik Sanusi who was playing beside me calmed me down by whispering "Rilek Zal,..rilek".
The game continued, and I had given him some material back (a rook + 3 pawns for a knight and a Bishop) At that time I even thought my Rook is better than a knight + Bishop. But after playing on, I blundered another pawn on move 44. However, I still remember Fischer's advice in his famous My 60 Memorable games, to exchange the pawns when material behind. Fahor Jahudi's problem was that, he has all weak pawns.
On move 46 I decided to kill of his knight and giving up my Rook. I considered that, this is the only way I could gobbled all the pawns and a lone;y Bishop cannot checkmate me. My judgment turned out to be a correct one. After 50.g4 hxg4 51.fxg4 I had 2 connected pass pawns. I was sure I would not lose and played on. After some maneuvers on move 64 I offered a draw seeing that, both could not progress. Again, my opponent scolded me:"kalau tadi saya nak draw. Sekarang saya taknak lah!". But suddenly after 65...Bh7?? I realised that my opponent had blundered. On move 76 it was my opponent who countered offer: "Nak draw?". I declined. After 73.Kc6 my opponent resign. Immediately another player of the IIUM whom we called his nick name as "Pocot' stated flatly " Tu laa.. tadi orang ajak draw taknak, kan dah kalah.."
Remembering this incident always made me smile. The names 'Pocot', Rahim, Arik Sanusi, Shamrazula who were the members of IIUM team might recall this incident, which I annotated it in my personal database.
Mr Fahor Jahudi, do you still remember this? Well, I did not took it hard at all, but it always make me smile remembering this incident.

SELANGOR OPEN 2010
Originally, I planned to participate in this coming Selangor Open. I had even sms my name to Mr Lim Tse Pin for registration. However, until this point, I have a problem getting the leave particularly on the Friday. The job's constraint is much more felt when I had been transfered to the headquarters of the Customs Department in Putrajaya. Maybe I will miss the Selangor Open 2010. The next tournament perhaps is the National Closed (or is it now national open?) scheduled to be held in the forthcoming June 2010. I think, I may not be able to participate too as my wife is expected to deliver my 4th son (according to what the doctor had scanned). Hopefully, all the readers will pray for her to deliver the baby safely... amin.
Therefore, all my chess activity is now limited to
i) Keying in the GACC 2005 games (Now the round 2 is in progress)
ii) Playing for the NUSA MAHKOTA in the DATCC league.. so, far I played badly, losing last week's game (poor attacking technique, poor opening) and lost by default 2 weeks ago.
May be I will come in one of the days of Selangor Open 2010, meeting chess friends, selling some books, e-books, buletin, chess demo (only 3 left).. etc
last year I participated, and the most crucial lost was on the final round when I blundered horribly against Faris Shafruddin. I may produced some or all the important moment from my last campaign in Selangor Open 2009 later.
What do occurs to me is, I won after blundering against Azman Hisham, I drew against Yeap Eng Chiam after a wonderful (in my opinion) endgame technique. I won against Muhd Syazwan also with very good endgame. I won against Mark Siew (by luck) after totally outplayed in the opening. The rest I need to lok back at my database at home (I am typing this before leaving the office- after the office hour)
And.. I did not realise, that, I have a number of fans reading my blog here... thank you very much. I shall continue sharing my knowldege with all of you via this blog.
